Today in Finland is not just another day. It is Minna Canth day, which is a commemoration of gender equality. Her legacy advocating for woman rights and social causes continue today. Here is six things you should know about this brave woman.

1-Minna was a Finnish writer, activist, mother, wife, dancer, and theatre actress. She was born in Tampere, Finland, in 1844 under the name Ulrika Wilhelmina Johnsson, as the eldest of four siblings.

2-She was the first woman in Finland to have a designated national day in her honor (March 19th).

3- Minna studied at the Jyväskylä Teacher Seminary, the first institution in Finland to offer higher education for women.

4-She worked for the newspapers Keski-Suomi and Päijänne, publishing her first fiction and short stories in the latter.

5-Her works focused on women’s rights. They addressed issues such as the separation of property between spouses. Her works also talked about the reluctance to become a mother and the injustices faced by women in society. Her writing included short stories, plays, and articles.

6-Her most important works are Työmiehen vaimo (The Worker’s Wife) 1885, and Anna Liisa, 1895.

The woman question is not only a woman question but a question of humanity.
