Did you know why the 25th of November is commemorated? This day is marked, since 1981, by women rights activists to fight against gender-based violence. It’s honoring the courage of the Mirabal three sisters, Minerva, Patrica, and María, brave activists from Dominican Republic, who were known as the “Las Mariposas” ( Butterflies). They fight and manifested their disagreement toward the dictator government of Rafael Trujillo. They were brutally murdered In 1960, and their bodies were found on the 25th of November.
In 1993, General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women through Resolution 48/104, which aims to eradicate violence against women and girls globally. In 1999 it also established the 25th of November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Today, Women Wheel wants to stand together and join the global movement campaign to eliminate violence against women and girls. As a journalist, I want my colleagues to recognize the importance of the topic and how to address it.
Here are some key points I extracted from the Handbook for Journalist published by the United Nations in 2019.
During the following ten days, one type of violence and two pieces of advice for journalists while reporting on the topic will be published. Stay tune in!
We stand, we embody, we heal, and build resilience together!
